Senpao's Biography

Senpao, self taught painter was born in Surabaya, is one of a lot of painters which is immortalise exotic of Balinese culture in his canvas. Was born in Surabaya, May 8th, 1949 and has resided in Bali since 1972. Senpao started his career as a proffesional painter, after studying art at Chana Art Institute from 1967 until 1968. In 1969 he has studied to a master, which is named S.Jikan. And then continue learned to Mr T Wing for a few years in Surabaya. From both masters, Senpao learned how to draw model, how to catch the face expression, body anatomy till body movements.

Senpao developed his naturalism out of general artistic perception. His creation, if viewed from formal perception, gives kaleidoscopic impression. Iconic elements such as parts of human body as well as religious objects are divided in small units of colors either in harmony or in contrast with each others. The parts were then integrated in a whole structure that has its own tones. The tones are sometimes realistic/ descriptive, and yet sometimes what is dominant in Senpao’s work is its sense of supernatural in a tone that is dynamic resulted from the encounter of empty space and crowd, silence and content as well as reality and dream.
